Hypnosis is a long practised form of mindfulness that incorporates acceptance and change but that moves beyond mindfulness as an active therapeutic intervention. It is also one of the most researched of all psychotherapeutic interventions. This Diploma course follows the guidelines of international hypnosis bodies such as the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the Milton H. Erickson Foundation while offering a user-friendly format with particular emphasis on clinical applications and clinician skills. It covers the principles, ethics and practise of hypnotherapy, especially in up-to-date, evidence-based, outcome-oriented approaches.
APPLIED HYPNOSIS UNIT
This unit goes beyond the traditional scripted approach to hypnosis. It teaches the application of hypnosis into therapy. It incorporates clinical and experimental approaches at the cutting edge of hypnotherapy and trains one to utilise therapeutic modalities of hypnosis in ways that are creative and individual.
The teaching component of this unit will be conducted over four consecutive days. The following topics will be covered: what is hypnosis, a history of therapeutic trances, myths and misconceptions, theories of hypnosis, hypnotic phenomena, hypnotisability and ways of measuring hypnotisability, induction and deepening techniques, types of suggestions and age regression. Applications will cover self-esteem, ego-strengthening, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, pain management, habit disorders, and other areas of interest for applicants. The style of teaching will be focussed on practical skills development with many exercises designed to facilitate the application of hypnotherapy in your daily therapeutic work with clients.
ADVANCED HYPNOSIS AND SUPERVISION UNIT
In this unit, over five consecutive days, the emphasis will be on the practical aspects of advanced hypnotherapeutic procedures. It will be rich in demonstrations and pragmatic exercises. Trainees will be given written materials, many original and specifically designed for this course. They will view a unique library of DVDs of leading international practitioners such as Milton H Erickson, Michael Yapko, Ernest Rossi, etc. The topics covered will include the principles of therapeutic change, nature of suggestion, recent hypnotic developments, psychobiology and mind-body healing, therapeutic double binds, paradoxes, yes sets, metaphors, dissociative strategies, and the embedded model of hypnotherapy.
Applications will be presented in the areas of health and healing, pain, cancer, behavioural disorders, depression, relationship issues and other clinical problems relevant to the trainee’s interests. This is a flexible course that can cover the core material while adapting the applications to your needs. You can expect to come away from this unit with a high level of advanced and practical hypnotherapeutic skills that will significantly enhance your counselling and clinical practice.
Learning new clinical skills can be one thing. Putting them into practice, and building the confidence to go on working with them, can be another thing altogether. The Supervision component of this unit is designed to facilitate that application. Supervision sessions will provide constructive feedback for developing and fine-tuning your hypnotherapeutic skills. They will be based on videotapes of your therapy sessions, practical exercises and live supervision where appropriate.

THE PRESENTER
George W Burns is Adjunct Professor of the Cairnmillar Institute, School of Psychotherapy and Counselling; Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Edith Cowan University and Director of The Milton H Erickson Institute of Western Australia. He has been active in several international hypnosis societies and is an Approved Consultant with the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis. In addition to many articles and book chapters on hypnosis he has published seven books including: Hypnosis in Australasia, Nature-Guided Therapy, 101 Healing Stories, Healing With Stories and Happiness, Healing, Enhancement. A frequently invited keynote lecturer and workshop trainer in America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia, George has been described as a “master clinician” by eminent colleagues, and as “among some of the world's best therapists” by the Milton H Erickson Foundation. His teaching blends a wealth of clinical and personal life experiences in a relaxed and pleasant style aimed at providing hands-on skills for the enhancement of therapeutic effectiveness. He has recently been invited to present to a High Level United Nations Meeting in New York on "Happiness and Wellbeing: Defining a New Economic Paradigm."
